In my house, was a pop-up Exhibition and event held in Ortiz’s parents duplex in southern california in 2016.
For this exhibition and event, half of the Ortiz family’s duplex was converted into a gallery space and used to exhibit a series of portraits. The portraits depict those who came into that particular house and contributed to making it a home, provided support to those who inhabit it, and engaged deeply to create kinship in and beyond that space.
in conjunction, an event took place outside the house. Tacos, music, cocktails, and craft beer were provided by members of ortiz’s community who held specialized skills but —at the time— were not able to use them on a daily basis or in their paid work.
In my house, provided a space for communion, creativity, collective labor, and sharing. Through that sharing more possibility for kinship was made available to those who attended. that said, in my h0use did not bring new life into the space it simply reorienting the Knowledge and experience held by the home and its inhabitants.
In my house was made possible by the collective energy of:
Maria Ortiz, Arturo Ortiz, Calista Lyon, Desmond Jervis, Christina Gubala, Luis Morales, Carlos Morales, Adam Alvillar, and the crew at Ambitious Ales.
hand-painted Mini Posters —12” x 12” Acyrla Gouache on wood panel— were made and gifted to those who made the event possible.
